Maher Scheme

Maher Ghar Scheme

In the state, many of the tribal padas are situated in hilly areas where roads are difficult to reach for immediate transportation of mothers for delivery to PHCs in emergencies. In most of the tribal areas, there is no mobile network coverage, which makes it even difficult to call ambulances for transportation. This is an important cause of high maternal and neonatal mortality in hilly and tribal areas. .

  • It is neither economical nor feasible to provide vehicles to each pada for transportation during emergency. There is no mobile phone coverage in remote tribal areas and landlines are out of order for prolonged time.
  • In such situation since 2011-12, one room/ Maher Ghar is functional in PHC premises where pregnant woman get admitted 3-5 days before her due date, to address above mentioned problems.
  • The Maher Ghar scheme is being implemented in

Thane Circle - Palghar (13),

Nashik Circle - Nashik (2), Nandurbar (10),

Latur Circle - Nanded (3),

Akola Circle - Amravati (9), Yavatmal (2),

Nagpur Circle - Gondia (13), Chandrapur (7), Gadchiroli (31).

Objective:

To ensure timely arrival of mother in PHC for safe delivery to reduce maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality.

Implementation Strategy:

A Pregnant woman is admitted in Maher room before four to five days of her expected date of delivery. The ANC mother in Maher room is daily examined by Medical Officer & Nurses of PHC and provides appropriate medical care and referral services in time, which ultimately reduces morbidity and maternal mortality. When labour starts, the woman is shifted to PHC for delivery. If any complications are detected during waiting period, the pregnant mother is transported to suitable higher referral center.

Under Maher Ghar Scheme, one room is constructed in PHCs premises. It has amenities like one sanitary block (Toilet and bathroom), one kitchen ota with smokeless Chulha and one solar water heater system.

In Maher room, mother along with her child and one relative can stay. The RKS of PHC is authorized to identify the Self-Help group or BPL, family from local village for cleaning and maintaining of Maher room and providing diet to the mother along with her child and one relative.

Compensation for loss of daily wages to beneficiary (Rs.200 per day/per beneficiary for average stay 5 days), ASHA incentives Rs.200/- per beneficiary, Maintenance cost to SHG per delivery (Rs.200 per day/per beneficiary. for average stay 3-5 days) is provided.
