Ayush

Introduction

The umbrella term ‘AYUSH’ is the acronym for Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, and Naturopathy& Homeopathy. The Department of Indian Systems of Medicine & Homeopathy (ISM&H), established under Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India in March, 1995, was renamed as Department of AYUSH in the year 2003. With the aim of utilizing the potential of AYUSH systems in Public Health, Mainstreaming of AYUSH was launched as one of the components of NRHM in 2005 in India & in 2008-09 in Maharashtra. After the formation of Ministry of AYUSH as an independent ministry, National AYUSH Mission has been launched in the country in 2014-15. The implementation of the mission in the state is in progress and will soon be functional

Aims and Objectives :

To recreate interest and faith in Indian Systems of Medicine & Homeopathy
Mainstreaming of AYUSH and Revitalization of Local Health Tradition under NRHM
Restructure the delivery mechanism of AYUSH systems to make them responsive to the needs of people
All AYUSH institutions to be strengthened with necessary infrastructure like building, equipment, manpower etc. 
Co-locate AYUSH facilities with those of Modern Medicine hospital for providing choice of treatment to the patient
Encourage & facilitate in setting up of specialty centers and AYUSH clinics at PHC, CHC & DH e.g. Panchkarma, Ksharsutra etc.
Integrate and mainstream AYUSH in all health care delivery system including NHPs
Disseminate the tried and tested concepts and practices of the Indian Systems of Medicine & Homeopathy
To promote the AYUSH systems with full emphasis on quality
Training of AYUSH doctors and paramedical staff
Involvement of ASHA and ANM in AYUSH

Implementation Strategies:

Strategy to implement the component “Mainstreaming of AYUSH” under NRHM, AYUSH services provided at Government Health Institutions as follows:

Programme Management Unit (PMU)

Programme Management Unit (PMU) under AYUSH is established at State Health Society. It is approved and granted by GOI.

District AYUSH Cell

To monitor the programme at district level District AYSUH Cell has been established at 33 District Head Quarter. Monitoring of information at District level and communication with state is being done by this cell. This cell is well equipped by computer, printer and furniture. Following officers are look after District AYUSH Cell:

Co-location of AYUSH Services at District Hospital Level

AYUSH Services are provided in 23 Districts Hospitals. Pattern of District Hospitals for AYUSH wing is as follows:

  • Assistant District AYUSH Officer – 1 (1 of the PG MO)
  • Ayurved Doctor- PG- 1 and UG- 1
  • Homoeopathy Doctor - PG- 1 and UG- 1
  • Unani Docotr - PG- 1 and UG- 1
  • Pharmasist – 1
  • Yoga & Naturotherapist – 1
  • Massasist cum Attendant – 1

Special AYUSH wing is established by the fund provided by Department of AYUSH, New Delhi, in 6 DH (Thane, Pune, Nashik, Amravati, Beed and Parbhani), also proposed in other 19 DH. Renovation and Repair of existing building is done and Equipment, Medicines are also provided with this fund. OPD, IPD and Specialized services like Panchkarma, Kshrasutra, Illaj-bid-tadbir, Yoga practices are also provided by AYUSH wing.

Co-location of AYUSH Services at Women Hospital Level

AYUSH services are provided to Female patients as well as Pregnant Mothers in 8 Women Hospitals. Pattern of Women Hospitals for AYUSH wing is as follows:

  • Ayurved Doctor- PG 1 (Female)
  • Yoga & Naturotherapist – 1 (Female)
  • Massagist cum Attendant – 1 (Female)
Co-location of AYUSH Services at Sub District Hospital/ Rural Hospital Level

Total 77 SDH and 153 RH are facilitated with AYUSH Services according to the Local demand. OPD as well as IPD services of Ayurved, Homoeopathy and Unani system are provided in these Sub-District and Rural Hospitals under Mainstreaming of AYUSH.

Primary Health Center Level

Already existing AYUSH infrastructure has been mobilized in 860 PHCs Ayurved Medical Officers posted from regular services of Health Dept. are rendering services of Ayurved OPD.

Ayurved Dispensaries Level

Already existing AYUSH infrastructure has been mobilized in 680 Ayurved Dispensaries. Ayurved Medical Officers posted from regular services of Health Dept. are rendering services of Ayurved OPD.

Unani Dispensaries Level

Already existing AYUSH infrastructure has been mobilized in 25 Unani Dispensaries. Unani Medical Officers posted from regular services of Health Dept. are rendering services of Unani OPD.

Medicine Supply

Supply of AYUSH Medicine is made from grants received from GoI, Dept. of AYUSH, New Delhi

Additional activities

AYUSH Doctors are involved in IEC activities. They are utilized for supportive supervision of ASHA Programme and other National Health Programmes. District AYUSH Officer and Assistant District AYUSH Officers visit to Health Institutions.

Various Schemes and Activities and their Present Status
  • Involvement of ASHA and ANM in AYUSH:-

3 State Level Officers are trained in Training of Trainers Programme of ASHA/Health Workers on Mainstreaming of AYUSH under NRHM. at NIHFW, Department of AYUSH,  New Delhi.
AYUSH syllabus is added in ASHA training, module No.4. This topic lectured by Local AYUSH doctors.

Activities established in AYUSH

AYUSH Booklet –For propagate of AYSUH services among Policy holders, Bureaucrats, Health Workers, ASHA and Public, AYUSH Booklet is published. It has been distributed to periphery.

AYUSH Standard Management Protocol -Disease wise Standard Management Protocol of AYUSH pathies is proposed.  A committee of experts from Government/ Semi Government/ Private Sector is established.

DHIS-2 -AYUSH formats are included in DHIS-2 software. The actual process of data filling is started by the institutes.

Study Projects – To assess the efficacy of AYUSH drugs on particular disease, four study projects are started by AYUSH doctors under Mainstreaming of AYUSH all projects are in progress.

Medicinal Garden-To introduce the importance of various medicinal plants, to create awareness about benefits and uses of plants in home remedies, the Medicinal garden is proposed and approved by GoI Medicinal Garden are established at DH Pune and DH Satara.

International Day of Yoga – Every year International Day of Yoga is celebrated on 21st June in all the districts as well as at the State level. Various lectures, camps and Yoga demonstrations are being organized in the districts in coordination with renowned Yoga organizations in the month of June.

Dhanvantari Jayanti –Dhanvatri is worshipped as Lord of Ayurveda and every year Dhanvantri Jayanti is celebrated as National Ayurved Day across all our institutes as an event to inculcate the team building spirit among AYUSH staff. This year National Ayurveda Day was celebrated on 5th November 2018 with the theme of ‘Ayurveda for Public Health’ at all 261 AYUSH collocated hospitals, Collector offices & ZP offices and State. Various lectures were conducted to create awareness about healthy diet and lifestyle to prevent diseases in coordination with Ayurveda Vyaspeeth.

VC-Through video conferencing we are able to review the work of DAO and ADAO monthly.

National AYUSH Mission:Various activities have been initiated under National AYUSH Mission in Maharashtra in 2018-19. A planning workshop was organized at YASHADA to discuss and prepare guidelines for various activities approved. Lectures related to Vipashyanna were organized in 355 talukas of Maharashtra on the occasion of World Mental Health Day on 10th October, 2018
